What Are Mutton Chops?

Mutton Chops are a facial hair style that comes from sideburns and goes back centuries. They differ from sideburns in that they stretch down past the cheeks. Some styles may connect to a mustache but will never have hair on the chin. There are a few great benefits to this style of facial hair. They are not very hard to maintain, give off a powerful masculine look, and are quite versatile and unique.

Mutton Chops Styles

We want to highlight a few of the more popular styles of mutton chops to help you make your choice.

Neat Mutton Chops

Neat Mutton Chops

This style of mutton chops is meant to be very clean. Expect to do a lot of trimming and shaving of the chin and neck to maintain this style. The beard is kept thin in this style and is suited perfectly for a well dressed gentleman. This is a modern take on the mutton chops beard.

Bushy Mutton Chops

Mutton Chops

For the man who wants a bit more of a rugged look. Let your beard grow for over a month and maintain your chin and mustache area as usual. Grow them out as bushy as you want then trim the mutton chops to the desired length. Provide proper maintenance after that to keep the bushy look.

When people think about mutton chops often Wolverine comes to mind. To achieve this look you need to first grow a full beard that is quite thick. Then you trim it so the cheeks stay very full but it tapers down towards the chin. Only a small part in the middle of the chin is shaved and the mustache is shaved or light stubble.

Stubble Mutton Chops

If you want to stay refined but like to keep some stubble you may want to consider this style of beard. To achieve this look keep the hair trimmed the length of stubble or a 5 o’clock shadow. Make sure and trim it around the edges and buzz it down to the right length every few days to keep a nice clean look.

Clean Mutton Chops

This style is a blend of sideburns and regular mutton chops. Clean mutton chops are not considered long or short and are meant to be kept very clean and trimmed at a medium length.

Elvis Presley Sideburns

Who doesn’t love The King, if you want to replicate his type of sideburns do the following. Grow out the hair on the sideburn as wide as possible, then shave at an angle towards the ear lobe to make a nice diagonal line. The centre of your cheek is where the end of the sideburn should be for reference.

Mutton Chops with Long Hair

If you prefer your hair long you can still rock this beard style. What looks best is to have them a bit longer than normal with a well trimmed mustache angled towards your jawline.

Strap Style Sideburns

Strap Style Sideburns

If you’re not quite ready to commit to full blown mutton chops this beard style may be for you. This style is 70’s inspired and looks classic blending sideburns and mutton chops together. This is also a great choice for someone that doesn’t want a mustache. This style can be achieved by growing sideburns thick and down past the jawline as far as you can. Then keep them trimmed around the edges and at your desired length.

John Lennon

John Lennon was one of the best songwriters of a generation and he was also know for wearing mutton chops. This style of beard is meant to look care free so trimming is not meant to be clean nor are the edges. Length wise the Lennon chops are quite bushy so you will need at least a month of growth to pull off this look.

Friendly Mutton Chops

The key difference between regular chops and friendly ones is the mustache. When I think of this style of facial hair I think of none other than Motorhead front man Lemmy Kilmister (pictured above).

How to Grow Mutton Chops

The first thing you want to do is grow a full beard with about four to six weeks of growth, you want good fullness and density for it to look right. It’s easier to do it this way since you won’t risk trimming away something you might want by accident while you’re growing them out.

Then once you have enough growth for your desired fullness you can shape your facial hair. Also remember if you want friendly mutton chops your mustache area has to be grown out at the same length. When its time to start shaping I recommend shaving your neck and chin first since this is the hallmark trait of the style.

Then you can decide whether or not you will keep the mustache or not and deal with that. The last step is to use a good beard trimmer and beard scissors to trim and shape your beard. If you really need help styling them check out a beard shaping tool.

How to Care for Mutton Chops

When it comes to maintenance of your mutton chops you will have to make a bit of effort. This involves frequent trimming if you want it to look clean, this also depends on the style.

You will first want to clean shave your neck and chin area with a good razor. After that you can use the razor to shave the angles around the chops to keep the shape you desire. Lastly you will want to trim the chops and mustache with some good beard trimmers to the length you’re trying to maintain.

Its always nice to treat your mutton chops to some beard oils and shampoos to keep them nice and soft as well.
